Crack Down on Dry Skin

It’s that time of year again. Winter is the season to wrap yourself with multiple layers, sitting in front of a heater and taking that hot steaming shower. Winter is also the season for dry skin. A lot of you will be taking that hot shower, quickly drying out natural oils. All that heat directed towards your skin makes it look rough and dull, producing red spots and flaking of dead skin cells. The skin is unable to maintain enough oil to keep your skin hydrated.

Hydrate your skin

Taking a long hot shower is one of the most damaging things you can do to your skin. Try taking shorter showers with lukewarm water and wash your body with hydrating soap to add that extra layer of moisture to your skin. The best time to moisturise your skin is after a shower because it absorbs into your skin easily. Start by lightly patting your skin dry and apply the moisturiser on damp skin. Moisturizing lotion that contain petroleum or silicone stays on the surface of your skin and keeps it hydrated over a longer period of time.

You don’t have to stop at just moisturisers, there are more ways of hydrating your skin such as face mask, invest in a humidifier, applying plant oils and cleansers/ toners.

Exfoliate your skin

Dry skin tends to flake off, creating a thick layer of dead skin cells. This layer prevents your moisturiser from doing it job. You should exfoliate your skin once a week to remove the layer of dead skin, allowing the skin to breath leaving it to look more healthy and radiant. Once exfoliating the skin, use a toner to help lock in moisture. Don't forget to moisture right after! Nowadays there are many tools for the face and body to help you exfoliate easy.

Drink water

It’s all about what you put into your body that reflects your skin. Drinking water everyday helps digestion, circulation, absorption and even excretion. It doesn’t stop at drinking water, you can consume water based food such as watermelon, yogurt, tomatoes, cucumber, oatmeal, honey and so much more. Also, you can whip up some of these ingredients to make a hydrating face mask or face scrub.
